What is HTML? HTML, which stands for Hyper-Text Markup Language, is the programming language of the World Wide Web. It allows you to create Web pages that are connected to other pages via hyperlinks.
What is a hyperlink? A hyperlink can be a word or an image that when clicked opens up a new page in a Web browser. You create hyperlinks while building your Web pages.
How do I create my Web pages? You can actually create Web pages using simple programs such as Windows Notepad, Simple Text on the Mac, Microsoft Word, or any text editor. However, you must have a very good understanding of HTML programming to do it this way because you will have to create the HTML code from scratch. An easier way is to purchase software that generates HTML tags for you. Some of the more popular programs include Macromedia Dreamweaver, Microsoft FrontPage, and Allaire HomeSite.
What should I name my home page file? Your home page file should probably be named "index.html," depending on the settings of your web hosting company. All other pages can be any name you wish, ending with htm or html. Ideally, filenames shlould not contain spaces.
What is a Web page editor? A Web page editor is software that enables you to create Web pages. There are two types: text editors, which generate HTML code, and visual editors, which generate HTML code and allow users to view and work on pages as they are created.
Should I use an HTML text editor or a visual editor? That depends on your skill level and desire to learn HTML. If you have no interest in learning HTML programming, you should consider using a visual editor such as Macromedia Dreamweaver because it creates HTML code for you as you design your Web pages. Those more adept at computer programming, or those willing to learn HTML, should consider a HTML text editor such as Allaire's Homesite. Although visual editors are easy to use and don't absolutely require you to know HTML, it is still a good idea to learn the basics of HTML programming if you plan to go beyond creating simple Web pages.
Where can I obtain graphics for my site? You can create your own graphic buttons, images, and horizontal bars for your pages using special graphics software. You can also purchase pre-existing artwork, called clipart, or visit some of the Web sites that allow you to use their images for free.
