1. How can I work from Adobe Illustrator, Corel Draw!, and 3D programs with Flash? Macromedia has released a free plug-in for Illustrator 8 users called FlashWriter that exports Flash movies from Illustrator. It's available for free from the FlashWriter Download page. The CorelDRAW Exporter for Macromedia Flash performs the same function for that application. If you are working with a graphic program and want to import your art into Flash, consult the Flash Help menu to see if your program can export a file type that Flash supports for import. The CorelDRAW Exporter for Macromedia Flash.
2. Is Flash compatible with other Web products like Adobe GoLive, Microsoft Frontpage, and NetObjects Fusion? Flash SWF files require the proper HTML files to display correctly in web browsers. Dreamweaver is the best solution for integrating Flash movies into web pages. Flash will also generate an HTML page to display the Flash movie, which could then be imported into other applications. If you are working with another HTML editor, it is important for that product to be able to insert the correct code for Flash movies. If you have questions about how to insert a Flash movie into one of these products, consult their documentation and technical support for information. For more information on using HTML editors with Flash movies refer to Using Flash with an HTML Editor (TechNote 14769).
3. Can Flash and Microsoft PowerPoint files be used together? Flash does not support directly importing a PowerPoint file, and vice versa. For ways to use the two products together, see Using Flash movies in PowerPoint 2000 (TechNote 14235).
4. Does Flash support embedded video? Flash can import QuickTime video, place Flash animation onto it, and export as QuickTime. However, video cannot be played back in the Flash 4 Player. Director can be used to stream video using the Shockwave 7.0.3 Player.
5. Can Flash import MP3 files? Yes, MP3 files can be imported directly into Flash 5 and later.
6. What is the difference between Flash and Director? When would I use one versus the other? Director can create presentations and interactive movies for CDROM or the Web. It is capable of handling a wide variety of file types, and has a robust scripting environment. Director can also be used to stream video. It can make self-contained projectors that can act as applications. Flash movies are geared towards the Web, and are best for small file sizes. Flash movies can be made into projectors for deployment outside of the Flash Player. Flash movies don't support embedded video, and they don't have as many features for creating applications or CDROM authored projects as Director does.
7. What is the difference between Flash and Dreamweaver? Flash and Freehand? Flash and Fireworks? Dreamweaver is a visual HTML and Web page authoring tool. Flash movies can be incorporated into Dreamweaver documents very easily. Freehand is a graphical drawing tool that creates vector illustrations and page layouts. The robust drawing features of Freehand are perfectly suited for import into Flash. Fireworks is an image creation and optimization program that can also create HTML and JavaScript effects. All of these programs are made to work together, and make great companions to Flash.
8. What is Generator? Generator is a server-side program that allows graphics to be updated and generated dynamically. Generator can output Flash movies, GIFs, JPEGs, and QuickTime movies. Flash is the authoring environment for creating Generator "templates". Template can contain placeholders for images, charts, scrolling lists and other objects. The template is processed by the Generator Server, which retrieves and merges data with the template from a variety of data sources including databases, Java class files and more. Refer to Generator's product page for a complete introduction to Generator's capabilities.
