1. How hard is the Cisco CCNA exam? How does it compare to other network certification exams?

Be warned that this test is harder than the MCSE or CNE exams. However, it does have some overlapping material with the Networking Technologies exam by Novell and Microsoft's Networking Essentials exam. Some trainers recommend that you take these exams before even considering the CCNA exam. While we would not go quite that far, we would say that if you do not have a solid understanding of the essentials of networking, you will be wasting your $100 exam fee.

The best option is to take Cisco CCNA classes and prepare very, very well by doing lots of studying.

2. What knowledge is required to pass the Cisco CCNA exam?

To answer this question fully would require more space than we have devoted to this Cisco CCNA FAQ page thus far, but what follows is some advice from people who have taken and passed the CCNA exam.

  • Know the OSI model inside and out. Know what each layer does with the information passed from both above and below it. Know which applications use which layer, i.ewe, MPEG, JPEG, RPC, SQL, EBCDIC, ASCII, Encryption.
  • Know Frame Relay as it applies to WAN protocols.
  • Know ISDN. Know the difference between TE1, TE2, NT-1, and U. Know the difference between BRI and PRI.
  • Know access lists. Know the implicit deny all, know how a deny filter that doesn't specifically state inbound or outbound will filter. Know wildcard masks (and not just the 0 and 255 ones).
  • There were fewer questions than expected on IOS and routing. There were a few questions on subnetting, and most of these questions did NOT use default subnet masks (e.g., 255.255.0.0 or 255.255.255.0).

3. What is the difference between 'CCNA' and 'CCNA 2'?

The CCNA exam has been retired. The CCNA 2 exam is the current exam.
